World first hajj hackathon won by saudi women

World's Most memorable Hajj Hekathon, Saudi Ladies Win First Award

The first Hajj Hackathon concluded on August 3 and the prize distribution ceremony was held three days later. About 3 thousand people from all over the world participated in this Hackathon in Saudi Arabia with their innovative projects. The purpose of this hackathon is to promote projects that provide facilities to pilgrims during Hajj. This hackathon became the world's largest hackathon with over 3,000 participants and entered the Guinness Book of World Records.

Participants who reached the final stage of the hackathon were given the opportunity to present their project or product to the jury panel and answer their questions. The panel featured local and international experts including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, TechCrunch's Mike Butcher and RiseUp's Abdul Hameed Sharara.

At the end of this hackathon, a group of four Saudi women were awarded the first prize of one million Riyals.

The women came up with a plan for an Android application called "Tarman", which pilgrims can use to see the meaning of any signboard in Makkah and Madinah in their local language. This application doesn't even require internet to run. This project is very simple and does not require huge capital. QR Code will be installed on the signboards.
By scanning them, the interpreter application will tell the meaning of the signboard.

In this hackathon, the second prize (5 million Saudi Riyals) was awarded to an Egyptian team that presented the Hajj Wallet project. Through this mobile wallet, pilgrims can pay for the purchase of various products or services. While money can be deposited in the application or wallet through the partners of Hajj wallet or through credit card and money can also be transferred from one wallet to another wallet.

The third prize of the Hajj Hackathon was awarded to the Algerian team that proposed Roaa, a social network in which pilgrims can take photos of themselves during the Hajj and share them with their friends and family.
